Trish Costello - Creating Portfolia, an investment fund for women to influence the market with their money
Women own half of the wealth in America and buy most of the products, yet rarely invest in startups. This was the reason Trish Costello created Portfolia, to enable and encourage women to invest in the companies they want to have in the market. Costello’s impressive career and extensive experience in Venture Capital and investments has led her to be named one of Inc Magazine’s 10 Women to Watch in Tech. Her passion though always lied in empowering female entrepreneurs and encouraging women to take charge of their money.
Portfolia was created out of this desire to build a community of women-led companies and female investors. Costello observed that, while women have money to invest in new companies, they are not invited to do so and this has an impact in what products get funded and brought to market. Men fund other men, who are solving men’s problems. If we want women’s problems to become the focus, then we need women VCs who understand the market to invest in female entrepreneurs solving problems for women.
Costello herself has said that through discussing funding opportunities with male VCs she’s found a hesitancy to fund products related to women’s health, reproduction or plus size fashion because they’re topics they don’t want to think about. Portfolia’s answer to this attitude is its new FemTech Fund, which will focus exclusively on female health and wellness companies. It’s time that we as women put our money where our best interests lie, solve our own problems and prove that we can be great investors as well as great entrepreneurs.
As a female-led company ourselves, we feel at Shello that it is our responsibility to help women become more aware of their finances and investing opportunities and realise the power we have. Join the conversation with our community of women in our Money & Finance group where you can ask your questions and share financial advice in confidence.
